Welcome to Logoff: The FAA has ordered flight cancellations at airports across the country starting today — and while the effects aren’t dramatic yet, the cuts will be more drastic soon.
What happened? Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said Because of the pressure of the government shutdown on air traffic controllers, who are going without pay, he will start limiting flights at the airport.
He was released on Thursday an order In doing so at 40 high-traffic airports, carriers will cut 4 percent of their operations today – increasing to 10 percent by next Friday.
Is it political? Many interpreted Duffy’s move as an attempt to make more people feel the pain of the shutdown, in order to pressure Democrats to agree to end it.
Has the airport been thrown into chaos? Friday’s overall level of cancellations of 4 percent is still not that unusual. Southwest Airlines calls it “a level we routinely operate during standard weather or irregular operational events.” The Wall Street Journal.
Still, the sanctions will be more painful as they ramp up to 10 percent next week.
Will the shutdown ever end? speculation A deal to reopen the federal government could be this week, in part because Democrats, buoyed by their strong performance in Tuesday’s election, Now believe They are winning the politics of closure and should hold them for further concessions.
President Donald Trump is also digging in. he requested Senate Republicans want to overturn the filibuster and reopen the government with their party’s vote — but, so far, they have refused. So the longest shutdown in history is getting longer.
And with that, it’s time to log off…
I have been watching the BBC recently Planet Earth II And was enthralled by a sequence featuring baby iguanas who, soon after hatching, must run to their island’s “safe area” to try to outrun a seemingly limitless number of deadly snakes. Happily, I found out This article by Carolyn Fremk The Vox archive explains how it was filmed — wild stuff.
